“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven – as her great love has shown…”
Luke 7:47 (NIV)
During this Easter season, Christians worldwide commemorate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Luke 7:36-50 serves as a poignant reminder of Christ’s boundless love, compassion, and, above all, His forgiveness. Mary Magdalene, known for her troubled past, encountered Jesus in Simon’s home. Jesus knew that this moment would be etched in history as love in action would be the object lesson.
Upon hearing that Jesus was dining at Simon’s house, Mary Magdalene devised a plan to approach Him. The details of her access to the luncheon are unclear, but she was determined to overcome any obstacle in her path. Her persistence serves as an inspiration during this season of reflection on the significance of the cross for humanity. Jesus warmly welcomed Mary Magdalene, extending forgiveness for her sins. His actions exemplified love, mercy, and grace. Jesus knew that this was one of the precursors that redemption is available to all.
The cross stands as the ultimate symbol of love and forgiveness. Jesus, while at this luncheon, shared a parable about debt forgiveness, emphasising that through Mary Magdalene’s profound faith and love, her sins were absolved. Forgiveness, He taught, is intrinsically linked to love. As Jesus hung on the cross, the love between the Father and the Son, and the Son’s love for humanity, culminated in universal forgiveness. If you seek forgiveness, come into the presence of the One who can absolve sins – our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
